Why Does My Skin Feel Different in Autumn?

Why Does My Skin Feel Different in Autumn?

One minute we’re talking about summer SPF, and the next the mornings are colder, the heating is back on and your skin suddenly doesn’t seem quite as happy as it did a few weeks ago.

If your skin feels tighter, drier, duller or just a little more unpredictable in autumn, you’re not imagining it.

Seasonal changes can affect how your skin feels and behaves, and this is often the time of year when people notice that the products they happily used all summer no longer seem to be doing quite enough.

So, why does your skin feel different in autumn, and what can you do about it?

Cooler weather can affect how your skin feels

As the temperature drops, the air often becomes cooler and drier.

At the same time, we start spending more time indoors with central heating on, which can also leave skin feeling less comfortable.

For some people, this shows up as tightness, flakiness or rough patches. Others notice their skin looking a little duller or feeling more sensitive than usual.

It doesn’t necessarily mean there is something wrong with your skin. It may simply mean that your routine needs adjusting for the change in season.

Dry skin and dehydrated skin are not quite the same thing

These two are often confused, but there is a difference.

Dry skin is generally linked to a lack of oil, while dehydrated skin is lacking water.

That means even skin that is naturally oily or combination can still become dehydrated.

Dehydrated skin can sometimes feel tight, look dull or develop fine surface lines, even if you are still getting shine in certain areas.

Understanding the difference can be useful because piling on a very rich cream is not always the answer.

Sometimes your skin needs more hydration. Sometimes it needs more support from nourishing ingredients. Sometimes it needs both.

You may need to change your moisturiser

A lightweight summer moisturiser can be perfect when the weather is warmer, but it may not feel like enough once autumn arrives.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you need the richest cream you can find.

It may simply mean choosing a formula that gives your skin a little more support and helps it feel comfortable throughout the day.

If your skin is suddenly feeling tight by lunchtime, that can be a useful sign that your current routine may need reviewing.

Be careful not to over-exfoliate

When skin starts looking dull or rough, it can be tempting to exfoliate more.

Sometimes that helps, but sometimes it does the opposite.

Too much exfoliation can leave the skin barrier feeling compromised, which may make tightness, dryness and sensitivity worse.

A gentler approach is usually better.

If you use acids, retinoids or exfoliating products regularly, autumn can be a good time to take a proper look at how often you are using them and whether your skin is still responding well.

More is not always better.

Autumn can be a good time to focus on hydration

Hydration becomes especially important when the weather changes.

Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and other humectants can help support skin that feels thirsty or depleted.

This is also where an overnight mask can be useful if your usual moisturiser needs a little help.

For example, the Airyday Night Rain Sleep Mask is designed for dry and dehydrated skin and can be used when your skin feels as though it needs more support overnight.

The important thing is not to add products just for the sake of it.

Choose them because they answer what your skin is actually doing.

Your skin may look duller in autumn

It’s common to notice a little less brightness at this time of year.

Changes in weather, hydration levels, routine and sun exposure can all affect how fresh your skin looks.

Gentle exfoliation, good hydration and a consistent skincare routine can help.

This is also where professional treatments may be worth considering if you feel your skin needs more than your home routine is giving it.

A facial or skin consultation can be useful if you are not quite sure what your skin needs.

Do you still need SPF in autumn?

Yes, SPF still has a place in your routine.

It is easy to associate sunscreen with hot weather, but UV exposure is not the same thing as heat.

There can still be meaningful UV exposure in autumn, and using SPF consistently remains a sensible part of a skincare routine.

If you use exfoliating acids, retinoids or certain professional treatments, sun protection becomes even more important because your skin may be more vulnerable to UV damage.

At Bourne Valley Beauty, I now stock the Airyday SPF50+ range, which includes clear, glowing, matte, mineral and fragrance-free options.

That means you can choose one that suits your skin and the finish you prefer, rather than feeling that every SPF has to look or feel the same.

Do you need to change your whole skincare routine?

Probably not.

This is where people can easily overcomplicate things.

Autumn does not mean you need to throw out everything you use and start again.

Often, small adjustments are enough.

You might need a little more hydration, a richer moisturiser, less exfoliation or simply a more consistent routine.

The most useful thing is to pay attention to how your skin feels.

If it suddenly feels tighter, rougher, more sensitive or more dehydrated than usual, that is information.

Your skin is telling you something has changed.

When might a facial help?

If your skin feels dull, dry or congested and you are not sure what to do next, a facial can be a useful reset.

It also gives us the chance to look at your skin properly and talk through what you are using at home.

Sometimes the answer is a treatment.

Sometimes it is changing one or two products.

Sometimes it is actually doing less.

That is why I prefer to look at your skin as it is now, rather than assume the same routine should work all year round.

Autumn skincare does not need to be complicated

Your skin can change with the seasons.

That is completely normal.

The key is to notice what it is doing and adjust your routine rather than forcing it to behave the same way all year.

If your skin is feeling drier, tighter, duller or more sensitive as autumn settles in, this is a good time to review what you are using and whether it is still doing the job.

And if you are not sure where to start, I’m always happy to help.
